Course overview
This intensive provides hands-on training in live sound engineering, combining both Front-of-House (FOH) and Stage Monitoring practices. Students will learn how to mix for live audiences and manage on-stage monitoring systems, working with real performers, digital consoles, and professional PA setups. The course focuses on developing technical precision, quick problem-solving, and clear communication under live performance conditions.
How will you learn
- Mix live performances using professional digital consoles (e.g., X32)
- Build and manage FOH and monitor mixes from scratch
- Apply EQ, compression, FX, and feedback control in real time
- Work directly with musicians during rehearsals and shows
- Gain experience interpreting tech riders and adapting to venues
Learning outcomes
- Create and manage multiple monitor mixes (wedges & IEMs)
- Apply EQ and dynamics to eliminate feedback and improve definition
- Operate digital consoles, scenes, and snapshots efficiently
- Communicate effectively with performers, FOH, and stage crews
- Execute live sound setups independently in concert or event settings
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, verifying your professional skillset.
Course structure
Overview of FOH and monitoring systems. Learn how signal travels from stage inputs to PA and monitor outputs. Identify key components of the live audio chain and their functions.
Configure a complete live setup including stage patching, PA connection, and monitor sends. Practice routing, input labeling, and console preparation for show conditions.
Gain staging, channel EQ, subgrouping, and level balancing for vocals and instruments. Explore mixing strategies for clarity, energy, and dynamic control in live settings.
Learn to use EQ, compression, and gating effectively. Identify problem frequencies and apply graphic/parametric EQ to eliminate feedback and maintain tonal balance.
Apply creative and corrective effects in FOH environments. Configure FX sends/returns and automation for multiple genres and performance contexts.
Create and manage individual monitor mixes for both wedge speakers and in-ear systems. Balance tone, level, and performer comfort under time pressure.
Build, save, and recall console scenes and snapshots. Manage transitions between acts and songs, and design efficient workflows for multi-band shows.
Set up talkback mics and communication lines between FOH, monitors, and performers. Practice professional communication etiquette during live shows.
Interpret technical riders, adapt setups to venue size and acoustics, and troubleshoot stage and system limitations in real-time situations.
Operate as both FOH and monitor engineer during a live performance or showcase. Demonstrate full workflow — from setup and soundcheck to live mixing and post-show evaluation.
Requirements
- Basic understanding of audio systems or DAW experience recommended
